Julie Hutchison

Julie Hutchison is a a creative environmental activist. She is also the founder of the Rainy Day Women.

Julie has always been concerned for the environment. When Extinction Rebellion broke in 2018, Julie felt compelled to act, to be part of the change so desperately needed. She started campaigning, delivering talks, training, and hasn't stopped. She is committed and passionate to a just and fair transition to cleaner and healthier lifestyles. She wants a brighter future that has more meaning than capitalism.

With a background in strong communication, Julie has worked in the insurance industry and in I.T. She started to study for a degree in 2017, but decided to shelve it to volunteer on the climate crisis. She feels morally obligated to do this work. She has embroidered since the age of 8 and she sews, paints, sculpts, weaves and is an avid fermenter of foods.

Her piece is called 'Energy in the face of adversity'. This is named after the meaning of the chamomile flower. Shakespeare wrote of the chamomile that the more it is trodden on, the more virulent it becomes. She felt this holds poignant meaning. The toddler dancing in the moonlight is full of energy, as is depicted in the woven stitching. The clouds hold a silver lining. The lettering is freehand and inspired by the San Fransisco Rock Poster movement, which Julie has always been deeply inspired by.

Julie is a mother, a wife, a carer and an independent councillor for her local town council, she was elected in May 2021. She is currently working for the campaign group MP Watch. Julie recognises that we do not have enough diversity in councils, and that people should be supported to step up in their respective communities.

She encourages people to get active, to recognise their own autonomy and make new friends in doing so.
