Radical Embroiderer

Radical Embroiderer specialises in hand embroidery and is interested in the way it can be used to highlight, question and challenge. She sees her embroidery as a form of slow protesting and a way of recording what us often overlooked or quickly forgotten.

She is interested in the interplay of stitch, colour and material, word & font. She also tries to inject humour into her work and sees it as a defence mechanism against insidious behaviour, a form of armour. It helps get the point across too!

There is no doubt that her embroidery is directly informed by her most recent employment as a welfare benefits adviser, working principally with people with a diagnosis of cancer and as a foodbank volunteer. Her experience invigilating at both Spike Island & Arnolfini galleries in Bristol, England and as a receptionist at The Bishop Suter Art Gallery in Nelson, New Zealand have also informed her work.

Radical Embroiderer is largely self taught although she has, amongst other things, completed a couple of RSN day courses.

The first embroidery piece she made was for the Spike Island VOLts exhibition in September 2018. (She had previously made jointly work that was accepted for the Bizarre Bra category of the prestigious World of Wearable Arts show in New Zealand. This though could not really be described as embroidery although stitching was involved!)

Since then she has gone on to exhibit both in galleries and online and has had her work feature in both print and video.

Other highlights include DJ Liza Tarbuck using her piece “Tell Us The Truth!” as her Instagram profile and being joint winner of cartoonist Martin Rowson’s #DrawPutin Twitter competition with her piece “Putin Pants Poisoner’s Pants”.

But most importantly she has enjoyed meeting and collaborating with so many brilliant artists.
